Big week of snow ahead of MLK Day weekend, Amex pop-up event in Vail

Vail and Beaver Creek have stayed soft the last few days, with six inches or so of new snow falling since Thursday, and heavier amounts are in the forecast for Saturday afternoon all the way into Wednesday of next week.

Both Thursday and Friday I skinned up with my dogs and explored around the top of Meadow Mountain — the old ski area between Vail and Beaver Creek — finding some boot-deep snow Friday afternoon.

Things will only get deeper as the weekend moves along, and next week is looking exceptional ahead of Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend Jan. 18-20.

“On Saturday morning [Jan. 11], we are seeing dry weather, but that won’t last long,” Opensnow.com meteorologist Joel Gratz wrote.

“Look for snow to resume on Saturday afternoon and we’ll see flakes through Wednesday,” Gratz added. “The deepest snow will be on Sunday morning, Monday midday/afternoon, and Wednesday morning. Another storm will make Friday (January 17th) a powder day.”

That Jan. 17 storm should hit just in time for MLK Day weekend and all those associated ski-town festivities for the three-day holiday weekend. For example, this is happening at Vail, according to a press release from American Express:
