Yard-sign troll invokes Trump in Vail Town Council election

Yard-sign wars in Vail.

Vail’s campaign yard-sign-gate just took a Trumpian turn as someone trolled the trolls.

Earlier this month, Denver attorney and Vail resident Karen Perez was the subject of “vote no” signs on public property – a first for a ski town that prides itself on civic civility.

Some community members questioned why the only woman of color on the Vail Town Council slate for four open seats on Tuesday, Nov. 5, was the subject of the only negative signage in town.

After the signs started cropping up on private property around town – “Vail Vote No on Karen Perez Town Council” – a sign troll offered their take, posting their own signs next to the anti-Perez ones reading, “Rich, White, Old Farts Say” and “Trump Says”.

Perez is a member of the Vail Planning and Environmental Commission that recently approved a workforce housing project in East Vail that’s ostensibly been opposed on wildlife habitat grounds but also because it will be “another employee-only ‘ghetto’ that has the potential for noise, traffic and ‘youthful activity’ at all hours.”

Those things are apparently anathema in a wealthy ski town that’s now 80-percent occupied by wealthy second homeowners.

Kaye Ferry, head of the local Republican Party infamous for her comments about Denver riff-raff overwhelming Vail as a result of the Vail Resorts’ Epic Pass, is opposing the latest workforce housing project.

The most recent sign wars are reminiscent of the disgusting attacks on Gov. Jared Polis last year in nearby Eagle, when police investigated homophobic yard signs attempting to smear the then congressman who represented Vail in Washington.
