Native Roots Wellness offering CBD products in Solaris Vail

The new Native Roots Wellness store in Solaris Vail.

Interesting move by Native Roots to open a CBD (cannabidiol) wellness store in Solaris Vail. The town of Vail has an ordinance prohibiting the retail sales of marijuana, but presumably it says nothing about CBD products, especially if they have low to no THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

THC is the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, or what gets you stoned. CBD, on the other hand, has been touted as a pain reliever and sleep aid that’s increasingly popular as a supplement for athletes and everyday weekend warriors – the kind of folks who come to Vail.

RealVail.com recently wrote a story for the Vail Daily on the CBD craze in professional golf – an article re-posted here. And that popularity has spread to elite athletes in other sports and to regular folks looking to ride their bikes or walk their dogs later into life.

Native Roots is one of the most popular retail and medical marijuana chains in Colorado, and it has its roots (pun intended) right here in Vail with Solaris developer and Vail resident Peter Knobel, who’s a major partner in the franchise.

The Native Roots store on the east end of the Green Mile in EagleVail markets itself as the closest pot shop to Vail Village, and the chain made headlines in 2016 by chasing the naming rights to Mile High Stadium in Denver – the NFL home of the three-time champion Broncos.

Native Roots Wellness opened with little fanfare at some point in the last few days right above the Cinebistro movie theaters in Solaris. No word yet on how town officials are taking it, but presumably they knew it was coming.

The town of Vail, like the town of Avon at the base of Beaver Creek, has chosen not to allow retail or medical marijuana sales – the full-strength stuff with maximum levels of THC. The reasoning is that more conservative guests from less-progressive states don’t like weed. Ditto wealthy Mexican tourists and homeowners who associate marijuana with the cartels.

It will be intriguing to see if people are able to mentally separate CBD products from Colorado’s broader and still booming cannabis industry.
