Killer coverage at Vail still, with new snow finally back in the forecast for Snow Daze

It’s going to be a fun weekend in Vail, with another snowstorm finally working its way back into the Vail Valley Saturday night during the first installment of the annual Snow Daze free concerts.

This weekend’s editions features Jakob Dylan and The Wallflowers warmed up by Lukas Nelson and P.O.T.R. (Promise of the Real). It’s an all-star sons lineup that includes the son of Bob warmed up by the son of Willie – all on Saturday night (Dec. 13) starting at 5:30 p.m.

Vail mountain birthday party

Great coverage all over Vail Mountain (especially the top of the gondola), which boasts 177 of 195 trails open and 23 of 31 lifts.

Also taking center stage on a Saturday night a snowstorm from the Pacific Northwest that, according to Opensnow.com, could bring 3 to 6 inches of new snow – a great thing considering it hasn’t really snowed in a couple of weeks.

It’s been a weird fall for weather so far, with absolutely balmy and perfect-for-mountain-biking temps all the way up to Nov. 10. Then it dumped 6 feet of snow over the next three weeks until about Thanksgiving, and then it quit it again until this weekend (hopefully).

If you’re trying to figure out whether to come out and ski for the holidays, let me just say that I got up on the hill Sunday and the coverage is amazing. No, there’s no pow, but virtually everything is open at Vail, including kid’s tree runs like Porcupine Alley (I was skiing with nine eight-year-olds for my son Rennick’s birthday).

The snow quality was excellent as well. It’s a tad thin in spots but still really good for this time of year. Now we just need the jet stream to shift so we can start getting some periodic powder pastings to keep the locals and Front Rangers happy.

Opensnow.com reports that another small storm may hit us around Dec. 17, followed by yet another around Dec. 20. Fingers crossed that means the prevailing weather pattern is shifting (unless you like spring-like temps on perfect corduroy groomers, which it’s hard not to like).

Round two of Snow Daze returns the following weekend with 10,000 Maniacs warming up Rusted Root on Saturday, Dec. 20. Could be another storm heading in with that show as well.

My sister in Bellingham, Wash., says it’s been pouring up there the last couple of days, and that’s what’s headed our way this weekend (although it’s supposed to split in two) – a massive Pacific storm that’s supposed to hammer the Lake Tahoe area. Good for them; they had a rough snow year last season. Meanwhile, the Northeast is also getting annihilated.

If you hit the concerts this weekend in Vail, do a snow dance at Snow Daze so we can get some of that.
