Huskies hammer Frisco Nordic course, qualify 19 athletes for state championships

Battle Mountain High School’s Nordic ski team finished third and second in a 5K skate race at the Frisco Nordic Center on Saturday, with Megan Rossman winning the girl’s division and Franklin Reilly taking second on the boy’s side.

battle mountain high school logoVail Mountain School standout Cameron Wolfe claimed the boy’s race with a time of 16 minutes, 29 seconds, and Reilly was right behind him at 16:41. Battle Mountain’s Quinton Cook was the next best Husky in 10th at 17:41. Overall, Battle Mountain’s boys finished second with 158 points to 163 for VMS.

On the girl’s side, Rossman claimed victory in a time of 17:34, followed by VMS racer Bridget Donovan in second at 17:51 and VMS’s Annie Blakeslee in third at 18:41. VMS claimed the overall girl’s title with 171 points over second-place Aspen with 165 and third-place Battle Mountain with 160.

In total, BMHS qualified 12 girls (top 45) for the state championships in Aspen next month. On the boy’s side, nine Huskies qualified for state (top 49).

“I just called [BMHS Athletic Director Ryan] McCay and said, ‘Three rooms is not going to be enough for State!!’” BMHS Nordic Coach Emalea Landgraf wrote in her weekly newsletter.

Next up is a Battle Mountain home classic race at the Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy Nordic course at Maloit Park in Minturn at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16. A fundraiser pancake breakfast will be held in the VSSA cafeteria next to the gym from 9 a.m. to noon. Bring five bucks or more and big appetite. All proceeds benefit the BMHS Nordic Team.
