Happy Thanksgiving from Real Vail, where every year we say, “Forget Black Friday. Go skiing!”
Then we don’t take our own advice, because most years we’re down in Tucson, where it’s going to the hottest ever Thanksgiving at a whopping 89 degrees Fahrenheit. Perfect for snoozing off that tryptophan by the side of the pool.
Meanwhile, all is well back home in the Vail Valley, where both Vail and Beaver Creek opened for the 2017-18 ski season on Wednesday after nearly a foot of fresh snow last weekend and colder temperatures ideal for snowmaking.
Now forecasters are calling for additional snow and a more winter-like pattern to move back in next week.
“Thursday [Thanksgiving Day] will be sunnier, then the northern mountains will see more clouds and a few snow showers on Friday,” meteorologist Joel Gratz of Opensnow.com wrote Thursday morning. “After that, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday should be dry, then we’ll get our next storm on Tuesday with a potentially stronger system sometime between December 2-4.”
Well, of course, because if you want it to snow, either wash your car or schedule a World Cup downhill race. I washed my car down here in Tucson, and the annual Birds of Prey downhill is set for Saturday, Dec. 2, after the super-G on Friday, Dec. 1. The giant slalom concludes the weekend of races on Sunday, Dec. 3.
Everything is reportedly in great shape for ski racing at Beaver Creek. And here’s a note from the good folks at the Beav’ who are gearing up for another season:
