A little over a year after picking his predecessor to head up the Eagle County school system, the district on Saturday night named assistant superintendent Phil Qualman to the top post in what’s been a messy process dating back to the departure of Jason Glass in 2017.

Currently interim superintendent, Qualman would take over for Carlos Ramirez, who was named superintendent in March of 2018 only to be let go in January of this year.

Here’s Saturday’s letter on Qualman’s selection, in both English and Spanish:

Dear Eagle County Schools colleagues,

After an arduous few days of interviews, community meet-and-greets, analysis of assigned performance tasks, and thorough deliberations, the Eagle County Schools Board of Education is excited to announce Philip Qualman as the new Superintendent for the school district. The actual contract and ratification of the selection will be completed at the April 24, 2019 Board of Education Meeting.

“We were fortunate to have three outstanding and dynamic finalists,” said Board President Kate Cocchiarella. “In the end, it was Philip’s in-depth institutional knowledge and vision for improving the strategic plan that made him the clear choice.”

Philip Qualman has been serving as the Interim Superintendent since February, but was previously Assistant Superintendent for three years, principal of Battle Mountain, assistant principal of Battle Mountain, and started with the district 15 years ago as a high school social studies teacher.

“Philip’s years of progressive leadership in the district are indicative of his ability to establish and maintain relationships,” Cocchiarella continued. “He has innovative ideas, makes data-driven decisions, and puts students first.”

In a Superintendent selection process, here’s what happens next. Once a Board of Education selects their candidate, the offer is made and generally accepted. The other finalists are notified of the decision. The Board of Education will choose two of its members to enter into contract negotiations with the selectee. A minimum of fourteen days must pass, during which terms of the contract are finalized. At the next Board of Education meeting following the fourteen day period, the Board will officially vote to hire Philip Qualman as Superintendent and approve his contract. This is expected to happen at the April 24, 2019 Board Meeting.

Please join us in congratulating Philip Qualman as our new Superintendent, and thank you to all who participated in the interviewing process.
