July 28, 2008 — Eagle County Clerk and Recorder Teak Simonton announced late Monday that she officially switched political party affiliation from Republican to Democrat.
Now in her second term, Simonton was first elected as a Republican in 2003. She tendered her resignation as a member of the Republican Party Central Committee to Randy Milhoan, Chair of the Committee.
“This is strictly a personal decision,” Simonton said in a release. “Party affiliation is not a factor in my job as clerk and recorder, and I have worked hard to prevent any partisan pressures from influencing the work conducted by my office, especially during an election.”
“I have great respect and appreciation for Eagle County Republicans. However, through the years it has become increasingly clear to me that my core values are more closely aligned with those of the Democratic Party.”
Simonton is the second Eagle County clerk to switch parties in recent years. Sara Fisher made the same move in 2001 after her own party unsuccessfully sued her, alleging voting irregularities in the close election of Democratic county commissioner Arn Menconi the previous year. Fisher was later elected as a Democratic county commissioner.
Simonton moved to the Vail Valley in 1982 and worked for years as a general manager of a chain of ski equipment and clothing stores. She’s generally received good reviews in her nearly five years as clerk.
“The support I have received from members of both parties as well as non-affiliated voters in Eagle County has been absolutely tremendous, and I will continue to serve all Eagle County citizens to the best of my ability, conducting myself with integrity and neutrality in every regard. I hope people will call me if they have any questions,” Simonton said.

Good for her. In a job like hers her party affiliation should not matter. She does a great job and thats all that matters!
